How to Host a Family-Friendly Baby Shower

My nephew and his wife are expecting a baby boy in a few months and we had so much fun planning this baby shower to celebrate his anticipated arrival.

Since the weather was so warm, we chose to hold the shower in my sister’s backyard. We created a focal point for our decor and food under the gazebo. We used the parents-to-be nursery board on pinterest for our inspiration.

This led us to create a gray, teal and blue color scheme for the decor. We started by hanging some knitted bunting across the top (hand knit by my mother, the great-grandmother) in our key colors.

Behind the main food table we propped an old door and fastened a stuffed bear head (handmade by my eldest niece) and a corresponding message for baby!

Helium balloons added a further splash of color and all that was needed was to load the table with food.

Popcorn is a personal favorite (and constant craving) of the guest of honor, so we made sure to have it on the menu. The popcorn boxes I found at HomeGoods were ideal for individual servings.

My middle niece provided the sweets for the shower. These strawberry brownie skewers drizzled with chocolate were so quick and easy to make, and were a huge crowd pleaser. The marshmallow cloud toppers were another HomeGoods find and provided the perfect finishing touch!

She also made these amazing apple and blueberry pies in mason jar lids. The white cake plate from HomeGoods served them up beautifully. We had real whipped cream on the side and lots of fresh fruit as well.

My favorite cake for a baby shower is a diaper cake. It’s so practical and also so simple to make. My eldest niece pulled this one together with some ribbon bow-ties and topped it with this adorable stuffed sheep. And, of course, the parents-to-be were thrilled to take this cake home.

For our baby-friendly beverage bar, we served sparkling lemonade in this drink dispenser,  from HomeGoods.

I found some delicious ginger-peach tea at HomeGoods, which we served over ice in glass carafes.

A tray of  mason jars with the teal and grey straws allowed guests to serve themselves.

“Love you to the Moon and Back” is a favorite expression of the Momma-to-be so when I spotted this picture frame at HomeGoods I knew we had to include it in our shower decor. Since baby has not yet arrived, we framed his ultrasound photo. You know this will have a prominent place in the nursery. And it added a nice personal touch to the beverage bar.

The fabric bunting was so simple; my mom just cut strips of old sheets in our key colors, and we looped them over a piece of twine fastened to the front of our drink station.

My youngest niece applied her artistic skills to this old wooden ironing board covered in chalkboard paint. As you can see, I have a very talented family!

Since the shower was held in the backyard, we used a wagon to corral all of the gifts. It made it super easy to haul them all out to the car when the party was over.

Our guest of honor loved her shower and all her gifts, almost as much as we love her and the little one she is expecting soon!
