My backyard is a mess with a lot of sections that are without grass; and, my dogs have turned several sections of the yard into their dirt play area.
I don't care to invest any more effort in grass replacement but I would like to invest some time and effort into making the yard look better. Any suggestions on what I could use to replace my grass or at least make the dirt areas look better?

[edit now that i've read the rules] I'm in North Florida. Some of the yard is shady, the parts the dogs have turned to dirt are in full sun. This is the north side of the house From a budget perspective, 500.00 I'm just getting started and don't have any real experience with landscaping.
