Blank slate! What should I plant?

Hey reddit,

So we moved into our house not too long ago and recently cleared all of the landscaping as it was all over grown. Also took down a few trees which were too close to the house.

We're having all of the gravel/weeds in the area between the house and walkway cleared in a few weeks, adding topsoil, grading, and creating a mulch bed along the house on both sides of the walkway (about 7ft from foundation) -- the rest will be lawn/grass from the bed up to the walkway. The rhododendron, sadly, will be removed as well as it's getting to large for where it is.

I'd like to plant along the foundation on both sides of the walkway in the fall. I'm totally new to this so wanted to get some ideas from you experienced folks and come up with a plan. The long term plan is to eventually replace the entire walkway with pavers, while also bringing closer (and parallel) to the house when the budget allows in a few years. But I'd like to keep everything I plant now when that time comes.

The house faces east and gets plenty of sun during the day. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
