I recently purchased a house that has everything I want except for a neighbor with a gigantic porch that overlooks my patio and backyard. Id like to plant some trees and/or hedges that grow to 10-12 feet to add some privacy to my yard but the problem is that I only have 7.5 feet between my foundation and fence/property line and I need to keep room for a walking path to go down the side of the house. The local nursery recommended Japanese Yew and Cherry Laurel but those are both highly toxic options which is a no go as I want a dog down the line. My googling leads me to believe that Wax Myrtle and Yaupon are the only options but I'm not seeing any info on how close I can place these to a fence and how high the lowest leaves should be to keep the path clear. The other option is to go with a clumping bamboo, but I was hoping to stick with a native option. If I went with a bamboo like Golden Goddess, how far from the fence would I have to place it so it doesn't end up growing on the neighbors lot? Appreciate any responses!
