Help! Turning An Overgrown Garden Back Into Lawn space

Hey Lawnies,

My wife and I recently purchased a house that used to have a pretty nice, and big, garden. Due to the previous owners being elderly and unable to maintain it, it has since turned into an overgrown mess.

I'm talking knee-high dandelions and prickly lettuce, all types of shrubbery, and some rather impressive chives that were still growing strong after years of neglect. It looked prehistoric. It looked Wild, and it looked crappy.

The area in question is approx. 32 ft x 25 ft. I had no choice but to take the weed whacker to it, and cut everything down to size, even at risk of spreading seeds.

NOW....My question is: What steps should I take before laying new sod?

You're probably asking "Why are you turning such a good garden space back into a lawn yard?" Well, because toddlers and children need more room to run and play and etc etc, or else I would probably try my hand at becoming a green thumb.

I've heard about soil solarization, I've heard about laying plastic down underneath new soil and sod, I've heard about chemicals (which, I don't want to do, because young kids).

So I'm asking you which method should I go with? This is my first lawn, so any suggestions or tips are accepted graciously.

Also, If any of you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

Cheers.

PS: I should also mention I am in Zone 3A for Canada, if that makes a difference at all.
