The other night after realizing we needed to weed our back patio (in between slate pieces) I decided I'd had enough of weeding (of course after a few drinks). The weed killer spray wasn't helping and didn't make life any easier. Before thinking though any of it, I went and purchased some weed netting/landscaping fabric from the local greenhouse. I started pulling up tiles thinking to myself "I'll throw this down and they'll never come back." Here is where the problem began.
What I didn't think about at all was the fact that the slate tiles in the ground were all different thicknesses ranging from about 4 inches to 1 inch. You can see where this is going. My original plan was out the window once I put the tiles down directly on the fabric and realized they were uneven.
The current situation I am dealing with here is as follows: a small slope downward toward the back of the patio, dirt/sand mixture with known weed spores in it, and slate patio tiles that don't fit anywhere now that I've pulled them out. Also, the patio is roughly 220 sq ft.
I'm trying to avoid purchasing a ton of gravel/rocks/sand (I don't want to have to buy enough sand for 3-6 inches here; I'm thinking more of a half inch).
My plan right now is to pull up the remaining tiles, level the dirt/sand that is already there, spread some of the weed killing pellets on top of that, then put about a 1/2 inch of sand on that. From there, tamp the sand down, and start individually laying each tile to make them as level as possible.
I'm renting this place, haven't told the homeowner of my improvement project, and don't want to spend an unnecessary amount of money.
Any thoughts on how to do this? Suggestions for what to lay down in what order and how to do it most efficiently?
