To be very clear: I am not a professional. I am nowhere near a green thumb. I'm much better with computers than I am with landscaping and basic yard work. I can run a lawnmower and other power tools but knowing which branch to cut, which plant to plant or which spot needs fertilizer is not my expertise.
That said, let me tell you a little about the situation: We moved into this property just under 1 year ago. We've focused primarily on the back yard -- now it's front's turn.
In this picture you'll likely notice the 8' posts -- we're putting in a privacy fence this weekend for the dogs. The fence will look something like this: http://ift.tt/1UalqpW We're not set yet on any particular stain.
What we've done: We've dug up a row of whatever plants are along the sidewalk which used to be on the right side of the sidewalk. I fully intend on digging up the left side plants as well. We've cleaned up the front flower beds and a random rock bed that was near the future fence gate. We've dug up the chain link fence and are in the process of installing a privacy fence. We've planted 4 tiny flowers in the raised flower bed to the left of the front stoop.
What you'll see: There are patriot hostas around the trees. There is a small flower bed right underneath kitchen window (left of the front door) and another underneath the big living room window (right of the front door) which I am considering turning into a front patio (thoughts?) -- this is mainly so that we have an option to drink coffee in the mornings outside. The deck in the back yard has no shade and by 6:15am in the summers the sun is so bright out back that it's difficult to even read the paper.
Location: Zone 4(?) I am in a suburb of Minneapolis, MN. Winters can sometimes get harsh (-40 degrees) and the summers can be humid and very hot (100+ degrees).
Soil: It's tough to tell. I would say it's a random mix of sand and clay. When digging for the fence posts there were some areas with nice black soil, some an ugly gray, and some a soft brown (deep).
House: Front side - West side. As you can see in the picture above this is a very shady area. There are two massive trees covering the house and sunlight is seldom in this spot. Much of the front yard has thin grass or no grass at all.
Budget: Depends on the curb appeal. I don't want to break the bank and spend 400-600-800 on this project as we (as of right now) very rarely use the front yard for much of anything.
Experience: I have a little bit of experience and with a little guidance can learn to use just about anything. In terms of soil maintenance, I am an amateur agriculturist.
Please note the front yard is basically divided in half and starts to slope towards the street. http://ift.tt/1XL9UWl
Any and all help/suggestions/ideas/brainstorming would be extremely helpful!
Thanks in advance.
