Hello all, My wife and I are building a new home in SE North Carolina.
Our home price will include grass and sprinklers in the front yard only. The backyard will be left as is (dirt) and is around 800 sq ft in size. (Perhaps 20 ft deep by 40-50 ft wide.)
I had the idea that perhaps we could just lay weed tarp and then put down river stone/pebbles of some kind. Then, we could put some planters here and there for aesthetics.
The weather here can be all over the place. Mild winters, but summer can be very hot and dry or very hot and wet. Palms do survive here and are popular.
The backyard is open, with no trees hanging over the property, so leaf litter should not be an issue.
I'm very open to ideas. I want something low maintenance because I do not have sprinklers back there.
