Help! Tree roots are killing my back yard!

Help! I recently had my back yard re-done. This was roughly 1.5 months ago.

As part of it, we had a 3 or 4 story tree cut down. After they removed the tree, they chopped up the trunk and removed it completely. They leveled the back yard, and laid down a patio with pavers.

However, recently, I have noticed that the roots have been sprouting little branches that pop up above the dirt. Now the BIG problem. The roots are growing and lifting up the patio we just put down.

I spoke to the person that did all the work, and he assured me that the roots shouldn't grow after the tree has been removed. It's only a matter of time before they die due to lack of nutrients.

Does anyone know about how long it will take for the roots to grow? I have been getting the little branches growing around 70 feet away from the original location of the tree.

TLDR: I had a tree removed (roughly 3 to 4 stories tall) and the roots continue to grow and are lifting up our patio.

Here is the only picture of the tree I have for reference. Notice it was a very active tree with lots of growth.
