Front yard is a corner hill, seeking wall or plant options

This is my second summer here and this front, south facing, corner of the yard is nearly impossible to manage. It's in full sun and with the slope, everything gets dried out. I tried my best to grow grass (you can see the two larger spots) before the summer heat came in and nothing grew. (good top soil, seeds, daily watering). The slope is difficult to see in the pictures but it's a few feet (you can see it's taller than 3 steps). The slope in itself is seemingly not enough to necessitate a wall but it's also just taller/steeper than what you would want to walk on.

A retaining wall is an option but not something I'd like for such a small area - plus, it hugs the driveway so I'd need to cut several feet into the hill to compensate being able to open the car door and not hit a wall. I inquired about a wall estimate and was given roughly $6,000 (45 foot wall at roughly 2ft height). Other than a wall, I'd love to know what might be some good options to make this part of the yard representable: add shrubs? Create two half walls and add more garden space? (I love to grow things but also dont want to be "that crazy garden house" - something simple would be nice too as I have enough garden projects to work on. Thanks for any comments and suggestions.

LOCATION: NEW ENGLAND ZONE 6
SOIL: Well drained (plus the slope). Soil is chalky - most likely bad soil (All grass patch projects I replace the top couple inches)

DIRECTION: Area faces South and is in full-sun
BUDGET: Minimal (I can spend money but am not looking for a major cash project)
EXPERIENCE: Adaptable. I built a shed last year and it looks great. (I can manage)
