We bought this house a year ago and now have time and money to spend on redoing our backyard. We had a bunch of ugly cracked concrete so we had a buddy come in and take it all out. He also leveled out our backyard to better than it was and also wiping out all the weeds. The ground is really hard and compacted but also still uneven so where water pools up. The road around my house is higher so I would have to drain to the left to where my neighbors shed is behind the fence. The dirt itself has lots of bits of sharp dangerous things like broken glass, metal bottle caps, screws, etc. We've been slowly picking out everything but after every rain, we find a ton more. I was thinking about tilling the hard ground to make it easier to level and then buying 2-3 inches of top soil with compost mixed in and spread it over my entire backyard. My soil composition is pretty close to 45% sand 45% silt and 10% clay from what I can tell using a jar of water and my dirt and letting it sit for days.
In the end, I want to have grass, automatic sprinkler system, a paver patio, and probably some mulch/bushes around the edge of the fence to pull the grass and water away from the wood.
What do you guys think I should do with this empty slate I got going on?
Also, we are in the middle of putting up the rest of that wooden fence so don't mind that =P
