Hi folks,
Crossposting this to a few similar subreddits. We've been working on our backyard and hit a snag that I hope someone could offer some advice on.
We laid down ~3 inches of decomposed granite with mixed in stabilizer. Underneath that is soil with some areas having gopher wire pinned into the soil.
We rented a plate compactor (Wacker 1550) from the same place we purchased the granite. They advised that we wouldn't need to layer and compact 1 inch at a time, but I'm wondering if that was good advice.
Our issue is the plate compactor is not pulling itself along. It's essentially vibrating and compacting in place, save for a few areas where it moves a bit. From what I can tell, everything is set as you'd expect - fuel wide open, choke closed (after warm engine), throttle full open. The thing just sits there and vibrates hard in place.
Our prep on the granite is wetting it, not so much that it's a slurry but enough that you see some light clumping.
Is there something we're missing or could check when operating the Wacker? Some light searching is suggesting that perhaps one of the belts has malfunctioned, but I'm suspecting we're probably doing something wrong.
Thanks in advance for your help!
