Need advice for reclaiming this neglected lawn

Backstory: I just bought a house. The previous owners did NOTHING with the back yard, and it is in a really nasty state, desperately in need of repair. Right now it seems to be a mix of wild grasses, weeds, and dirt, with little to no "lawn" to speak of.

I'm thinking my goal is to convert it into a moss lawn over time. I love the way moss looks - it has an ancient, woodsy, zen feel to it - not to mention the advantage of being extremely low maintenance. The area is shady, beneath a thick canopy of trees, with a slight slope. My plan is to landscape it a little, with some rocks, etc., and segmented garden beds.

But for now, I'd like to start over with a clean slate by eliminating the grass and weeds that are there currently.

Any ideas on the best way to do that? The actual lawn area is probably about 35ft wide and 25ft deep, with mulched beds around the edges, and a large dirt and gravel covered area opposite.

Here's some photos of the kind of coverage I'm dealing with: http://ift.tt/29b5sLt
