My new neighbors have decided to re-landscape their yard, and it's causing some headaches and friction. They gave me a big dog and pony show about how they were going to discuss everything they were going to do with me before they did anything, but that's not the way it's worked out. That's part of what irks me; they try to act like they're really nice.
They tore down all the privacy screening plantings and cut down two gorgeous red maples that were just on their side of the property line. (I know that it's their right to do that, but they knew I objected to it strongly.) It looks horrible. And resulting from that, plants I had in partial shade that are now in full sun are getting their leaves scorched. I'm going to have to do major work on my side to make things look decent again.
I still have one red maple in my yard, but 1/3 to 1/2 of its root system is on theirs, and they've piled about 18 inches of dirt on top of its root zone. I'm afraid that it could possible kill the tree. I gather that, legally, I can then sue them for replacement of the tree, but I'm hoping to try to prevent that. I've left messages for them about it, asking them to protect the root zone, but they haven't responded.
Then, part of the silt fence they put up for construction is 6" over on my property.
They say they're going to put up a new fence, but I'm wondering how far off the property line they should be putting the fence. I'm worried they'll try to put it right on the line since they seem to be very aggressive about pushing out as hard as they can against the property line.
I'm much more used to neighbors who like "soft" boundaries between yards. With the previous neighbors, I hardly knew exactly where the property line was. It was just never an issue.
How would you deal with these people? Would you demand to see their site plan?
Also, if possible, please, no lectures about what they are legally entitled to do on their property. I know that. I was just raised differently to respect boundaries with neighboring properties. I would never have done something that would totally mess up the way everything in my neighbor's yard looks.
