I am planning to fill in the walkway between my house and fence. It is about 5' by 40'. Currently, it is grass and has a proper grade away from the house. It receives practically no sunlight, so the grass has become poor and bare in spots.
My tentative plan is to kill off the grass, add a curved edging (likely paving type stones) at the end, lay down landscaping fabric directly on top of dead grass (no sod-cutter), fill in with medium bark chips. I will likely try to build a small gradient over the final foot or two into the fill to try and keep the 'step-up' from the existing lawn/edging stones to the bark fill relatively gradual.
Does this sound like a solid plan? Am I foolish to dig down a few inches with a sod-cutter? How many inches of bark fill is recommended?
I do not plan to add any plants/trees/bushes in the filled area. There seems to be mixed opinions on this subreddit as to the value of using landscaping fabric to prevent/limit weed growth in filled areas.
Any thoughts/opinions are greatly appreciated!
