Had a couple questions about my small patio block project.

I'm laying down 9 patio blocks in a 3x3 square so I have something to set my fire pit cage thingy on. Was just planning on laying the blocks down in the dirt and spreading mulch over the remaining dirt in the area. (This is my first time doing anything with pavers/patio blocks)

The blocks are 16" x 16" and 2" thick and weigh 42 pounds each.

The area will be 4 sq.ft. and, with the fire pit full of wood, will weigh almost 400 lbs.

I am just wondering if I need to worry about laying down 3" of gravel and 1" of sand underneath for this small project? And then if I do that, do I also need to lay down paver edging too? (it would cost about $30 for the gravel and sand and about $30 more for the paver edging).

Everything I have read online says to use gravel/sand underneath, as well as edging to keep it in place, but all those are huge patio projects so obviously you want to make it last a long time.

Q: Do I really need that for my little project?

Q: How much shifting can I expect if I do nothing?

It's only 9 blocks so adjusting it every year wouldn't be a big deal.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
