Hi, I'm attempting to set a plan for how I want to deal with our back yard and the largest issue is how to deal with water (Seattle area, so decent amounts of water). Currently all water from the front road is cycled into the back yard. All water from the roof is pushed into the back yard, and we sit in a bit of a trench. (we're downhill on three sides and the fourth side is level-the side with the wooden fence). We are bringing in a tractor to do some serious dirt moving, as well as acknowledging we're going to have to buy some fill as well as how we have to completely redo the fence (my patch job is barely holding on).
Last fall/winter the portion along the wood fence became a swamp, so my question is how best to deal with that water. Our plan is to level the entire yard and terrace the back, but that doesn't affect how the water is held or moved since we're at the bottom of a hill. Would putting 2-3 inches of pea gravel as a base under the topsoil work as enough of a pseudo-french drain to keep it from flooding or do I need to look into something like dry wells or water gardens along the north (lowest currently) side?
