Just bought our first home in NZ and are keen to put our DIY skills to the test.
We have a large back section (31 x 13m) with a gradual slope of 1.75m from the back of the house to the back of the section. Currently there's a dirty big shed right in the middle that we're keen to knock down. There are a few established trees that we're keen to keep.
I've done a scale model of our rough plan - see the pics The trees in the pics are the current established ones. The big items are
- the retaining wall and associated earthworks allowing us to have two flat levels which will hopefully be more useable than the slope.
- building the new shed with attached glass house
- building the raised beds and fence (to keep the dog out) next to the shed
- building the deck around the back of the house
We're not sure what to do with the lower level to make it functional for entertaining. The green shed is a woodshed and is really like to build a fire pit into the plans but don't know where to fit it in.
The banks right at the back of the section will rise about 75cm over 2m to take it up the level of the fence line. We were thinking we would plant those with native grasses.
Looking for advice and ideas really... Is there anything in the pics that is a really crummy idea? There doesn't seem to be much garden and there's a lot of lawn. Not sure how best to resolve it really.
The soil is great for growing and we get heaps of rain.
