Hey guys. I've browsed this subreddit for a while and finally have a question I don't think has been asked previously-
I'm getting ready to put in a retaining wall with 12x4 blocks (big orange box variety) and have most everything figured out with regard to height (2ft max in my area without a permit), drainage, backfill, etc. My question is around the footings. Normally I'd dig down a a foot or so, lay 8 or so inches of gravel, then start the first layer underground to help prevent movement. This wall though will run along two sides of a concrete slab (back patio). I certainly don't believe the footing needs to be as deep and am thinking about a 5 inch trench and 4 inches gravel so the blocks start one inch underground with the face against the patio.
Before I screw up two walls, is there a general rule for this situation?
Thanks!
